“Public Opinion and Communication” course by Chief of Police, Dr. Aşkın

Dr. Hüseyin Aşkın, Izmir Provincial Chief of Police, started to teach “Public Opinion and Communication” course to graduate program students at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Dr. Aşkın will be sharing his knowledge and experiences with students throughout the 14-week course. Indicating that they would be experiencing an academic-based, current, and participative course process, Dr. Aşkın said, “I am very happy and excited to be contributing to the development of young people.”
A very successful professional himself, Izmir Provincial Chief of Police Dr. Hüseyin Aşkın, who received his Master’s degree from Public Administration Institute for Turkey and Middle East, and his Ph.D. from Gazi University, Graduate School of Social Sciences, gave information about the course on his first day in class. Meeting each student individually, Dr. Aşkın talked about communication and perception strategies, and the power of social media. Among the attendants of Dr. Aşkın’s first lecture were Mahmut Özgener, President of IUE Board of Trustees, Emre Kızılgüneşler and Selami Özpoyraz, Members of IUE Board of Trustees, Prof. Murat Aşkar, IUE Rector, Prof. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, Director of Graduate School, Prof. Ebru Uzunoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Communication. Dr. Aşkın, who were closely involved with students, addressed a student who called him “Chief of Police”, and jokingly told him that in class they should be calling him “teacher” not the “chief of police”.
“METHODS OF COMMUNICATION CHANGE ALONG WITH KNOWLEDGE”
Stating that he worked in many areas in different parts of Turkey, including counter terrorism, and homicides, Dr. Aşkın indicated that he was very happy and excited to be with students. Dr. Aşkın said, “We are in an era where information changes constantly and change occurs rapidly. Not only information and technology, but methods of communication change as well. Young people need to know the powerful methods of communication in order to reach their goals, and self-improve in the areas they want. I believe our course will be great help to them in that sense.”
“THERE WILL BE MUTUAL INTERACTION”
Indicating that they would be experiencing an academic-based, current, and participative learning process, Dr. Aşkın said, “I never forgot my days as a student, my expectations at the time. I returned to this academic ambiance with a very different status, where I was once as a student. In class, there cannot be a thought like ‘What I say is correct’. You can only get results, and improve yourself with participation, reasoning, and discussion. A German philosopher defines education as ‘a process in which the intelligent and experienced people relay what they learned with a high price to intelligent and inexperienced people at no cost. We will try to ensure this during our courses. Of course, I will be learning things from them as well. There will be mutual interaction. I also believe that assignments and exams are an important part of learning. I will be giving many assignments. I will ask them to write articles. I believe we will be completing a very successful semester.”
