Faculty of Communication
Dean's Message
As the Faculty of Communication, we are among the six faculties of the Izmir University of Economics, which is the first Foundation University of Izmir. The University was established in 2001, and we started education during the 2003-2004 academic year. We have the privilege of providing education in Izmir, the third largest city of Turkey, where the first newspaper was published (ahead of Istanbul) and where the local media have developed a strong tradition.
Communication is a process that makes us human, and we are in communication in any given moment through social-sharing networks, television channels, websites, movies, and mobile phones. In the midst of all this communication, we need qualified communicators who have a good knowledge of their field, of their country, and of the world; who are creative and professional; and who are committed to ethical values, now more than ever. In today’s world, where the means provided by Internet technologies have greatly changed the quality of the media environment, we believe that communication education needs to be integrated. Therefore, we offer education in three departments: Media and Communication, Cinema and Digital Media, and Public Relations and Advertising. The latter department offers a dual diploma program, the Public Relations and Advertising Dual Degree Program, which is carried out together with the State University of New York. In addition, as part of the ERASMUS Program, we have student and academician exchange agreements with twelve European universities.
Our students have access to an applied Public Relations and Advertising Studio, a Media and Communication Studio, a TV and Film Studio, a News Center, Mounting Rooms, Radio Studios, and a Movie Theater furnished with professional equipment. The products of our students are featured on RadyoEko, in Ünivers Gazette, and on video sites. Apart from a two-month compulsory “away” internship, we allow our students to do internships in the field during the semester as they continue with their formal education at the University. We bring our students together with representatives of the sector frequently, apart from their coursework. These representatives of the Izmir media and communication sector make up our Advisory Board.
